This homemade berry chia jam is a healthier and tastier jelly option with a variety of uses. Slather onto a classic peanut butter and jelly. Assemble with yogurt for a decadent parfait that’s perfect for breakfast or a snack/dessert. Lather up a freshly baked slice of banana bread. Dunk with crackers. And lots more.

Store-bought jam is delicious but frequently loaded with sugar. If you have the time, consider making your own. It’s just as tasty, it’s simple and the ingredients are in your control.

The berries. You can use fresh or frozen to make your jam! I love to use a combination of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries but you can use any combination that you like. However, if you’d like to use only one kind of berry, the same amounts apply.

Sugar. Instead of refined sugar, we’re giving the berries just a tiny boost of sweetness with maple syrup.

Thickening agent. Some jams are thickened with gelatin. Gelatin is the jelly-like substance created by boiling the tendons, ligaments, and bones of animals, usually pigs or cows. Kosher gelatin is usually obtained from fish tissue. In contrast, there are plant-based sources that are not so icky and do the same job: chia seeds!

The powerful little chia seeds absorbs the liquid from the berries and syrup and then grow in size to help create that thickened jelly texture. None of the animal parts and all of the protein, fiber, and omega 3s of this powerful plant.
